Understanding Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a group of cardiovascular risk factors that includes obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. This combination of risk factors acting together significantly increases an individual's risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Identifying the Risk

Identifying and treating patients with metabolic syndrome is an important objective for CHD risk reduction. While obesity (and particularly abdominal obesity) is the predominant risk factor for metabolic syndrome a number of other factors also increase the risk.

  • Insulin resistance
  • High triglycerides
  • Low HDL cholesterol
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Prothrombosis (elevated blood clotting)
  • Proinflammation (elevated C-reactive protein)

The Cholestech Solution

Cholestech LDX® and GDX™ Systems are the ideal weapons in the fight against metabolic syndrome allowing the identification of many of the prime risk factors for the condition including triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, C-reactive protein, impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance.
